Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?

Working at an international law firm as big as DLA Piper is not something many 18-year-olds get the opportunity to do! The work that DLA Piper offers to solicitor apprentices means that each day brings new learning opportunities. These varied experiences combined with extensive support means that I'm always being pushed and striving to achieve my potential. I get a lot of contact with clients across a range of industries, from sports to financial services. 

The firm's culture means there's lots to get involved in outside of my fee-earning work. For example, pro bono work, leading on fundraising events for office charities and playing an active role in the people networks.

Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experiences at DLA Piper?

I've been lucky enough to be given responsibility to deal directly with clients, draft core documents involved with transactions and even attend in-person client meetings in Dublin! This responsibility has helped to build my confidence. Having the chance to experience such a wide range of practice groups is a real positive of the firm's solicitor apprenticeship. The range of opportunities expands my legal and commercial awareness, working with different teams enables me to learn the similarities and differences between the practice groups. 

Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?

Be proactive about starting your career! The competitiveness of the profession can be daunting and off putting when considering whether to pursue a career in law. However, if you're proactive about your career and can evidence your interest in law then you'll have lots to talk about in your applications. 

There are many ways to demonstrate your interest in law, ranging from online work experience opportunities, virtual talks and even mini courses to undertake learning about the foundations of law or specific areas of interest. 

I would also advise students to create a LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is an extensive platform which can help students better understand the right career pathway as well as a place to find career opportunities.
