Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?

There were several reasons which drew me to work at DLA Piper. After deciding that studying at university wasn't for me, I started exploring degree apprenticeships. I completed work experience at DLA Piper as an A Level student which gave me a good indication about the firm's culture and values. It showed me that at DLA Piper, people are down to earth, motivated, and work collaboratively together in a supportive environment to bring about great achievements.

Amongst other things, I was attracted to the firm's international reach providing the possibility to be involved with work and clients spread across multiple countries – I have had the opportunity to use my mother tongue (Polish) whilst working on some transactions! From this, I knew that I could build my career at DLA Piper and become a well-rounded solicitor.

What does diversity, equity and inclusion mean to you, and how are you involved in DLA Piper’s people networks?

Diversity, equity and inclusion means something more to me than just a phrase, it is a shift in culture towards a more equitable and open environment making underrepresented members of society visible. DLA Piper's focus has always been on diversity, equity and inclusion and how we can make each person feel safe, heard and valued to fully engage in conversations, without the fear of judgment.

I am the local lead in the Manchester office for Horizons, our social mobility people network. Horizons champions individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, like me, to feel empowered and demystifies the invisible challenges we face entering professional workplaces. I have been involved in the firm's flagship outreach programme Head Start, which focuses on mentoring talented students from underrepresented backgrounds entering the legal profession.

I have also steered and participated in the Future Leaders Programme, alongside the 2021 Lord Mayor of the City of London, Vincent Keaveny. This initiative developed a series of one-day programmes for young people around the UK to enhance their employability skills and knowledge of career paths. As an apprentice, I'm proud to be involved in our people networks to ensure the firm reflects and represents our communities.
