What do you think makes DLA Piper different to other law firms?
The people. I've worked with a range of colleagues across the firm's practice groups and business services teams and everyone is approachable and friendly. Having a large trainee intake in London means you develop close friendships from day one. What stands out to me is that that people love their work and also have a life outside of work, creating an enjoyable workplace for everyone.
What does diversity, equity and inclusion mean to you, and how are you involved in DLA Piper’s people networks?
Diversity, equity and inclusion has always played a significant role in my career at DLA Piper. The idea that "you can't be what you can't see" really resonates with me, and as a socially mobile candidate I struggled to understand what a career in law entailed as well as how to best showcase my skills to be accepted onto early careers programmes. My role now as an IP lawyer suits my want of working with the creative industries, whilst being still being academic, but I didn't know this job existed before I was at university. I benefitted from the advice I received from various social mobility platforms which helped me when applying to law firms. I'm now a committee member of DLA Piper's social mobility network, Horizons and love contributing to the firm's diversity programmes. I'm also a mentor for various social mobility schemes.
Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?
Research firms carefully and apply to those whose practice areas, sector focus and culture align with your personal interests and skills. You'll then be able to showcase what makes you an ideal candidate. When asked about what interests you in the legal/ commercial world, choose topics that you're genuinely interested in and not those which you think the firm wants you to answer. You'll then be able to talk more candidly and enthusiastically. And finally, remember that law is a people-focused business, not just an academic one, so make sure to show your people skills!
