Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?
My 3 main reasons are:
1. Team. When I say team, I mean the people. It's the people that make DLA Piper. The people here provide a supportive learning environment and allow you the chance to grow at your own pace.
2. Opportunity. The firm provides opportunities that nowhere else has to offer, including international training programmes, early client facing exposure and the opportunity to take the next step. 'Next step' may have different meanings depending on each practice group and jurisdiction. For me, this has meant the opportunity to make oral advocacy in a high-stake scenario.
3. Horizon. The firm's global reach is a constant reminder to me that the horizon is the limit. DLA Piper truly brings into perspective what 'broadening one's horizon' looks and feels like.
Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experiences at DLA Piper?
When I was at 2-year PQE, my team allowed me the opportunity to cross-examine one of the key opposing witnesses of a very high-stake case at an arbitration hearing. This opportunity was a career milestone for me. For context, a counsel's cross-examination in a case will make or break the case. This experience was invaluable for me and is an example of the trust the firm put into its people.
Join the firm that's willing to give you opportunities that unlock your potential.
Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?
If you've decided to pursue a career in law, the first law firm you decide to work at is an important decision as it will shape your outlook of your career. I'd recommend not selecting a firm solely for its name or market reputation, but instead for its people – the team that you'll work with for the rest of your time there.
How would you describe the culture at DLA Piper?
DLA Piper fosters a work-life culture that fosters productivity, career growth and sustainable ways of working. The firm's inclusive culture means feeling that you can be accepted for who you are at work, regardless of your religion, gender identity, race and beliefs.
