Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?

Before moving to Singapore, I lived and worked in Amsterdam. During my traineeship in Singapore 6 years ago, I fell in love with the country and the region, due to the tropical climate, high standard of living, interesting people, amazing food, and the opportunity to travel.

When the chance came up to join DLA Piper and contribute to setting up a tax practice in Singapore, it was a “golden ticket”: the perfect blend of professional opportunity and personal affinity for the region.

Joining DLA Piper meant becoming part of an exceptional global law firm known for its extensive network, high-quality services and strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion. In addition, the firm's presence in the Asia Pacific region combined with opportunities for growth in Singapore provided a vibrant and challenging environment.

It's been a year now since I made the move, and I am very happy with the decision.

Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?

My key piece of advice is to embrace curiosity and courage.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. The world of (tax) law is complex, and becoming a good lawyer or advisor requires a deep understanding, which starts with questioning.

This includes saying yes to the opportunities that push you a bit further than you are used to. They are often the most rewarding experiences that teach you the most. For me, this meant saying yes to speaking at a conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, where I had never been before, and traveling there on my own. It was scary but turned out to be an incredibly valuable (and fun) experience that was a catalyst for more.

How would you describe the culture at DLA Piper?

DLA Piper's culture is built on diversity, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds. This creates a space where everyone can be themselves and where differences are valued and celebrated, and a dynamic and inclusive environment that provides for diverse role models, including strong female leaders. This is important for me, being a female advisor that stepped out of the comfort zone and moved across the world to live and work in Singapore.

At DLA Piper, an international, cross-border vision, entrepreneurship, and innovative ideas are supported and there is a strong emphasis on collaboration across borders and practice groups. This is underlined by the extensive global network. This combination provides opportunities for steep personal and professional growth, especially for young lawyers and advisors.
