Why did you choose to work at DLA Piper?
I wanted to have a professional experience outside of France where I'm originally from and applied for an internship at DLA Piper in the intellectual property and technology department in 2020 (during the pandemic). I got along with the team well, enjoyed the work and learned a lot during my internship.
So, after my internship, I stayed in touch with the team until I finished my studies in France and became a French qualified lawyer. After graduating, I joined the firm full time.
How would you describe the culture at DLA Piper?
The culture at DLA Piper revolves around its people. There is a synergy between different team members towards a common goal: delivering the best quality work to clients while ensuring that everyone grows professionally.
We have many initiatives within the firm where everyone can find something to get involved with, from pro bono initiatives and business development projects to, social events. There is a real dynamic that allows people to do more than just work and go home. DLA Piper is a place where people can really connect.
Is there anything you would like to highlight about your experiences at DLA Piper?
Since joining, I've been part of many initiatives beyond being a lawyer.
I was a member of the diversity, equity and inclusion committee and now I'm the vice-chair of the firm's wellbeing committee. We run initiatives to promote the wellbeing of the firm's employees such as weekly Pilates classes, massages, hiking days, ice cream stall at the office (with healthy and not-that-healthy options, of course!) and pétanque tournaments.
I also volunteered to be a First Aider/Fire Marshall and received training at the Red Cross.
Do you have any advice for students aspiring to pursue a career in law?
My advice would be to trust your instinct and choose a work environment that makes you feel valued, rather than staying in an environment where you don't feel like you will be able to be true to yourself. It's your life, so trust yourself to take the necessary steps to grow and become the person you want to be.
Don't be afraid to reach out to people. Whilst you may face setbacks in finding job opportunities, you just need one person to give you a chance. It takes time but, step-by-step, you'll build your career and your network.
